Athletes competing in the fourth edition will take part in 17 diverse sports: handball, table tennis, athletics, padel, fencing, boxing, taekwondo, karate, swimming, billiards, snooker, 3x3 basketball, shooting, archery, volleyball, equestrian, and bowling.

Competitions will be staged across 10 state-of-the-art venues, including Aspire Dome, the Women’s Sports Hall, Hamad Aquatic Centre, Qatar Sports Club, the Qatar Billiards and Snooker Federation Hall, Al Gharafa Sports Club, Lusail Shooting Range, Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club, Qatar Bowling Federation Hall, and Duhail Sports Hall.

Swimming events will kick off on May 12 at the Hamad Aquatic Centre and run for four days, alongside the start of 3x3 basketball competitions at Al Gharafa Sports Club for two days.

Aspire Dome will host taekwondo events over two days, in addition to table tennis competitions continuing until May 17 at the same venue. Meanwhile, billiards competitions will run until May 15 at the Qatar Billiards and Snooker Federation Hall, while bowling events at the Qatar Bowling Centre will continue through May 17.

On May 13, equestrian events will begin at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club and continue until May 15.

Aspire Dome will also host fencing competitions over three days and boxing over two days, while shooting events at Lusail Range will run until May 20.

Athletics competitions will commence on May 14 at Suhaim bin Hamad Stadium at Qatar Sports Club and continue for four days. Handball events will also begin at Duhail Sports Hall, running through to the final day on May 22.

Snooker competitions will take place from May 15 to 19, while volleyball events will run from May 16 to 19 at the Women’s Sports Hall.

Padel competitions at Aspire Dome will continue until May 20.

Archery events will begin on May 17 at Lusail Shooting Range and run until May 21, while karate competitions will be held on May 21 at Aspire Dome for one day.

Historically, the inaugural GCC Games were held in Manama, Bahrain, from October 11 to 22, 2011, featuring around 1,500 athletes from six nations competing in 11 sports. Qatar finished third with 20 medals (7 gold, 11 silver, 2 bronze).

The second edition took place in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, from October 12 to 26, 2015, with five participating nations and nearly 1,500 athletes competing in 15 sports. Qatar again secured third place with 59 medals (21 gold, 22 silver, 16 bronze).

The third edition was hosted by Kuwait from May 16 to 31, 2022, featuring over 1,500 athletes competing in 16 sports. Qatar placed fifth with a total of 52 medals (16 gold, 21 silver, 15 bronze).

Beverly Hills: FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Tuesday defended World Cup ticket prices, insisting that football’s global governing body was obliged to take advantage of US laws that allow tickets to be resold for thousands of dollars above face value.

FIFA has faced searing criticism over the cost of World Cup tickets, with fan organization Football Supporters Europe (FSE) branding the pricing structure “extortionate” and a “monumental betrayal”.

FSE filed a lawsuit with the European Commission in March targeting FIFA over “excessive ticket prices” for the tournament.

FIFA’s own World Cup resale website, FIFA Marketplace, last week advertised four tickets to the July 19 final in New York at a cost of more than $2m each. Infantino said the eye-watering prices reflected demand to watch the World Cup.

“If some people put on the resale market, some tickets for the final at $2 million, number one it doesn’t mean that the tickets cost $2 million,” Infantino said.

“And number two it doesn’t mean that somebody will buy these tickets,” Infantino said. “And if somebody buys a ticket for the final for $2 million I will personally bring him a hot dog and a Coke to make sure that he has a great experience.”

Fan groups have contrasted the difference in price of tickets for this summer with the Qatar World Cup in 2022. The most expensive ticket for the final in 2022 was around $1,600 at face value, while in 2026 the most expensive ticket for the final is about $11,000 at its original price.

Infantino was adamant that the steep increase in face-value prices were justified.

“We have to look at the market -- we are in the market in which entertainment is the most developed in the world. So we have to apply market rates,” Infantino said.

Doha, Qatar: The 13th round of the Qatar Equestrian Tour (Longines Hathab), in its ninth edition, continued at the main arena of the Qatar Equestrian Federation, featuring strong competition in the Amateur 100cm and Silver 130cm classes.

In the Silver Tour, Madi Al-Khamis claimed the title with a time of 26.64 seconds on Bevor. Hussain Saeed Haidan finished second in 26.92 seconds on Saucedo, while Bader Al-Fard secured third place in 27.36 seconds on Murdock. The winners were crowned by Hassan Al-Nasr, Director of the Qatar Dressage Team.

Head of the Facilities and Logistics Committee for the tournament Mohammed Saleh Al Marri presented the awards to the top three riders of the Amateur Tour.

In the Amateur Tour, Nasser Hamad Al Thani clinched first place with a time of 23.55 seconds on Equinoxe de l’Aulne. Alqaqaa bin Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani finished second in 24.05 seconds on Bon Suela, while Moza Hamza Al Kuwari took third place in 26.61 seconds on Haneen. At the end of the round, Mohammed Saleh Al Marri, Head of the Facilities and Logistics Committee for the tournament, presented the awards to the top three riders.

The first day of the round also featured dressage competitions across introductory levels, where Najla Abdullah Al-Khalifi, Sheikha Shaikha Ahmed Al Thani and Hemyan Al-Kuwari secured victories in their respective categories. The winners were crowned by Hassan Al-Nasr along with dressage judges Irina Makanami and Mariam Al-Jaidah.
