Kaizer Chiefs will not win the league next season, says Ben Youssef

Former Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef believes Amakhosi are still some way off from challenging for the Betway Premiership title. cricket-ipl.in

The Tunisian tactician recently parted ways with Chiefs alongside Cedric Kaze. Despite their departure, the duo helped guide the Soweto giants to a third-place finish last season, which is the club’s highest league finish in six years.

Speaking to Andile Ncube, Ben Youssef stressed the importance of being realistic about the club’s current position and future ambitions.

“I think, to make things easier, we have to be honest with people and explain to them. Yes, we played to win, but we were not ready to win,” he said.

When asked whether Chiefs could win the league next season, Ben Youssef gave a blunt response.

“No, they are not,” he said.

The former Chiefs coach believes sustained recruitment and long-term stability are required before the club can realistically compete for the title.

“It’s good recruitment that will make them win the league. If they continue like that for a minimum of three or four years, the team will be ready to fight for the league,” he explained.

“You need to keep the same team, continue with the same coach, maintain the same mentality and playing style.”

Ben Youssef also warned against allowing key players to leave, citing defender Aden McCarthy as an example of the type of talent Chiefs must retain if they are serious about building a championship-winning side.

“We can see with the situation of Aden. He left the team. Aden played more than 60 or 70 percent of the games and was one of the best defenders. Now you lose him and you have to replace him,” he said.

“If you are building, you have to keep your top players and continue to build.”

Having parted ways with Kaze and Ben Youssef, Kaizer Chiefs are yet to name a new coach.

Who should coach Amakhosi next season?

Springbok centre André Esterhuizen is excited for the challenge provided by an experienced Barbarians midfield in Gqeberha on Saturday.

The Baa-Baas have paired Munster’s Alex Nankivell with former France international Virimi Vakatawa.

New Zealander Nankivell made 20 appearances for Munster this past season and was a key figure in the Irish club’s run to the Vodacom URC playoffs.

Vakatawa, meanwhile, featured in 10 matches for the Fijian Drua in Super Rugby Pacific and brings a wealth of experience, having earned 32 Test caps for France.

“It’s a powerhouse centre pairing,” said Esterhuizen, who will start alongside Jesse Kriel in the Bok midfield.

“Alex Nankivell is a strong, abrasive runner with good offloading skills and good distribution.

“And we’ve all seen Virimi Vakatawa play for France. He’s a very experienced centre who’s been around for a long time. He’s also a strong ball-carrier.

“So it’s going to be a good battle in the centres. I’m excited for the challenge. It’s going to be a good one.”

TEAM: Saffas bolster Baa-Baas for Bok clash

While the Barbarians are renowned for their attacking approach, Esterhuizen insists the Springboks will treat the non-cap clash like a Test.

“We just want to go out there and play our game,” he said. “I know it’s a Barbarians game and everyone looks at it and thinks it can be loose. They might want to make it loose, but we’re just going to stick to our processes as we do in every other game.

“For us, it’s a normal Test. That’s how we’re going to handle it and go into the game. Hopefully we’ll be successful in doing that.”

One of the most intriguing Springbok selections is the decision to start Lions fullback Quan Horn at flyhalf.

The 24-year-old will make just his second appearance in the green and gold after earning a Test cap off the bench against Portugal in Bloemfontein in 2024.

“I think we can all agree he’s a very good player, with a lot of skill and a good reading of the game,” said Esterhuizen.

“I think he’s slotted into the No 10 position very well in training. He’s been working hard and learning on the go.

“But with support inside and outside him, players who can help him and guide him, I think he’ll be very good in that position.

“And it’s a great option to have as a utility back.”

The Springbok scrumhalf has been confirmed as a Kobelco Kobe Steelers player, ending weeks of speculation following the announcement that he would leave the Sharks at the end of the season.

Williams will join the Japanese club from the start of the 2026-2027 campaign, bringing an end to a memorable stint in Durban where he developed into one of South Africa’s premier scrumhalves.

His departure leaves a sizeable hole in the Sharks squad, with Jaden Hendrikse and Ross Braude expected to shoulder greater responsibility moving forward. JP Pietersen’s ranks have however been bolstered by the signing of Springbok Ivan van Zyl.

For Williams, however, the move represents an exciting new challenge.

“I am very honored and excited to be joining Kobelco Kobe Steelers from the 2026-27 season. I have heard many wonderful things about the club and the city of Kobe, and I am looking forward to meeting the Steel Mates and playing for Kobe.”

Dans un entretien au Parisien, ce mercredi, l’attaquant lillois a félicité son ancien partenaire dans l’attaque tricolore et savait que ce moment se rapprochait de plus en plus. « Pour la symbolique, j’ai bien aimé que ça se produise durant la Coupe du monde, puisque j’avais moi-même dépossédé « Titi » Henry à l’occasion du précédent Mondial au Qatar.
