Afghanistan began their preparations for the India-Afghanistan T20I series with their first practice session at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, although heavy rain delayed the start of the proceedings.
The day began with heavy showers in Delhi, while several road restrictions were also in place due to the BRICS Summit. The rain eventually stopped, but the practice session was delayed as Afghanistan’s coaching staff and captain Ibrahim Zadran were seen having lengthy conversations with the ground staff.
The team eventually began its practice around 4 pm, with the players starting with a warm-up session. Noor Ahmed, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Gulbadin Naib were among those playing football, with Ibrahim Zadran joining them later. The players appeared to enjoy the lighter start to the session.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz, meanwhile, got into batting practice, while head coach Richard Pybus was seen addressing the players during a team huddle before the team moved into the nets.
Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Azmatullah Omarzai and Naveen-ul-Haq were among the Afghanistan players who bowled in the nets. Rashid was also seen bowling to Gulbadin Naib, while batters at the two nets faced their respective spinners and pacers.
Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmed spent considerable time in the nets, while Gurbaz also had an extended batting session. Noor-ul-Haq worked on his wicketkeeping during the practice.
Overall, Afghanistan managed to put together a productive session despite the delayed start. However, rain returned towards the end of the session, with the ground staff bringing the covers back on.
