Alejandro Kirk, the Blue Jays’ two‑time All‑Star catcher, was placed on the 10‑day injured list on Saturday after a dislocated and fractured left thumb sustained in the 10th inning of a 5‑4 loss to the Chicago White Sox. The injury was caused when a foul ball struck his glove, and X‑rays confirmed the damage.
To replace Kirk, the club recalled Brandon Valenzuela from Triple‑A Buffalo. The 25‑year‑old, who has yet to appear in a major‑league game, will split time behind the plate with Tyler Heineman while Kirk recovers. The Jays also assigned veteran left‑hander Patrick Corbin to Single‑A Dunedin after signing him to a one‑year deal.
