MLB star Garrett Anderson died from acute necrotizing pancreatitis, the Orange County Sheriff Coroner's Office confirmed Tuesday. The three-time All-Star and 2002 World Series champion passed away last week at age 53.

The Angels great was one of baseball's most durable players, averaging 156 games per year in his first eight seasons and finishing with 2,529 hits and a .293 career batting average. His wife Teresa had initially told ESPN she believed Anderson died of a heart attack.

"Garrett will forever hold a special place in the hearts of Angels fans for his professionalism, class, and loyalty throughout his career and beyond," the team said in a statement. The Angels have honored Anderson with a "GA" patch on their jerseys and an emblem in the outfield of Angel Stadium. forestarrow.help
