Moyes defends Branthwaite’s left‑back role

Everton manager David Moyes defended using centre‑back Jarrad Branthwaite at left‑back ahead of the Newcastle match, a decision that angered fans.

Moyes said Branthwaite is comfortable at left‑back as well as centre‑back, citing recent games against Manchester United and Brighton where he filled the role. He added that young defenders often start on the flanks before moving to central positions.

The move has drawn criticism from Everton supporters, who feel the 23‑year‑old should play in his natural position. Branthwaite has made 80 Premier League appearances, mostly at centre‑back, and is considered one of the club’s best defenders.
